Car security advice
1. Don’t display
Never leave anything on display that might tempt a thief. Phones, sat nav, shopping bags – even an old coat…take them with you or lock them in the boot.
2. Immobilisers
A professionally fitted engine immobiliser prevents your car starting – widely regarded as the best way to stop thieves.
3. Parking
Always use and lock your garage at home if you have one. If not, always try to park in a well-lit, open place.
4. Secure car parks
When you’re out, always choose an attended car park if you can. Look for the police-approved Safer Parking Scheme ‘Park Mark’ sticker.
5. Steering locks
Use a steering lock every time you leave your car.
6. Car alarms
A car alarm can not only deter a thief from taking your car, but also from stealing items from it. Get one professionally fitted.
7. Locking wheel nuts
These are cheap, easy to fit, and stop thieves stealing your wheels.
8. Etching
Have your car registration number etched onto the windscreen, all windows and the headlamps.
9. Security markings
Mark all your car equipment, like your car stereo, sat nav, etc. with your car registration number.
10. Check
